Complexity with purpose
Why “Medium Number”?
Some systems are small enough to understand piece by piece. Others are so large that statistics become the primary tool.
In between are medium number systems: complex environments where interactions, context, adaptation, and human judgment matter.
That is the territory we are interested in. We build software that helps people work with that complexity rather than hiding it.
What we build
Different domains, guided by the same goal: help people thrive and systems work better together.

Research and explorationCompassion Practice
We build Compassion Practice — an app for finding the second sentence, the one that says what is actually going on, before the first one does damage you have to clean up later.
Reading about compassionate communication is easy. Reaching for it while your jaw is tight is not. The app is built for the second problem: small, repeatable reps you can do in four minutes, so the words are there when you need them.
“You never listen to me.”
Same moment, same person, same frustration — sorted into what happened, how it landed, what was missing, and what could actually be asked for. That sorting is the practice, and it is learnable.
Short decks across the core moves — separating observation from judgment, naming feelings precisely, finding the need underneath, and making a request someone can genuinely say yes or no to.
Paste in the sentence you were about to send. It flags hidden evaluation, a demand dressed up as a request, or the place where “you always” crept in — and offers what you might have meant instead.
Timed rounds to sharpen recognition, plus a record of what you have practiced and what keeps tripping you up. Progress you can see, without streak guilt.
The material comes from people who facilitate this work in rooms with real conflict in them, not from a content team paraphrasing a book.
What we believe
Nobody changes how they speak by understanding a framework. They change by rehearsing, badly, many times, somewhere it is safe to be bad at it.
The app will never tell you that you communicated wrongly. It will show you what a sentence is likely to do, and let you decide.
This work spreads through communities that do not have large budgets. Sliding scale belongs in the product, not behind a special request.
What you type in is not training data and not a growth channel. Take it all with you, or delete all of it, without asking anyone.
Our approach
Start with the people who live inside the system.
Design for relationships, feedback loops, constraints, and consequences.
Use AI where it creates real leverage, not simply because it is available.
Expect requirements, environments, and understanding to change.
We build at the intersection of human systems, engineered systems, and applied artificial intelligence.
About the company
Medium Number Systems was founded by a software engineer with more than three decades of experience building complex enterprise systems across finance, energy, manufacturing, logistics, and industrial automation — alongside community work centered on compassion, dialogue, and human connection.
We believe the most important software problems are neither purely mechanical nor purely statistical. They exist where people, information, machines, and judgment interact.
